Silica Needlemat (Felt)

  • Silica needlemat is a felt made of amorphous S-TEX silica fibre that is mechanically needled and completely free of any chemical binders.
  • The high content of silica makes the product more compact, flexible and resistant to the maximum operating temperature of up to 1000°C in optimum conditions.
  • The diameter of the fibre is 6 microns or more and the length of the filaments are equal to approximately 50mm.
  • Silica needlefelt is odourless, white in colour and non-flammable.
  • It is chemically stable and offers a good level of  thermal and acoustic insulation.
  • Thanks to its heat insulation characteristics, it is used in the form of cushions to insulate turbines, combustion chambers and exhausts.
  • On request, the needlefelt can have a stamped, embossed or perforated aluminium lamination applied.
  • It can also be adhesived backed for ease of applying in situ.
  • We can also die cut and stamp parts to any drawings or sketches supplied.

Additional Information on Silica Needlemat Insulation

Silica needle mat is a high-performance insulation mat manufactured from mechanically entangled silica fibres, creating a dense and flexible structure without the use of chemical bonding agents.

This manufacturing process ensures the final mat maintains excellent purity, high temperature stability and consistent performance in demanding environments.

The base material used in silica needle mat is derived from high purity silica fibres, which provide outstanding thermal insulation and durability. Compared with standard glass fibre insulation such as E glass or S glass, silica needle mat offers significantly improved temperature capability and enhanced resistance to thermal degradation.

Because the structure is formed entirely from interlocked fibres, the mat demonstrates excellent mechanical strength while remaining lightweight and suitable for complex installations. This combination of strength and flexibility allows the material to be easily cut, shaped and installed across a wide range of project requirements.

Silica Needlemat

Performance and Material Advantages

One of the key advantages of silica needle mat is its excellent thermal insulation performance combined with low thermal conductivity. These properties allow the material to effectively reduce heat transfer in high temperature environments such as turbines, exhaust systems and industrial process equipment.

Unlike traditional glass fibre insulation materials, silica needle mat maintains its structure and performance at temperatures up to 1000°C under continuous operating conditions. The use of high purity silica fibres also ensures improved chemical stability and long-term durability.

The structure of the mat allows it to be supplied in both rolls and converted sheets, depending on the application. These formats make it ideal for insulation jackets, removable covers and custom fabricated components.

Applications Across Industrial and Automotive Sectors

Due to its versatility, silica needle mat is widely used across a range of industries including power generation, petrochemical processing and the automotive industry. In automotive applications, the material is commonly used for exhaust insulation, silencer infill and heat shielding in high-performance cars.

The mat is also used extensively for insulating turbines, combustion chambers and hot pipes, where reliable thermal insulation and durability are critical. In these environments, the material helps protect surrounding components while improving system efficiency.

Because of its flexible structure, silica needle mat can also be used as a filler within insulation jackets or layered with other fabrics and insulation materials to create multi-layer systems. These systems are often used in project-based applications where tailored insulation solutions are required.

Silica Needlemat

Installation and Fabrication Options

Silica needle mat is easy to handle and install, making it a practical choice for a wide range of industrial insulation project requirements. The material can be cut into custom shapes, supplied in continuous rolls, or converted into pre-cut parts and insulation sheets.

For ease of installation, the mat can be supplied with an adhesive backing, allowing it to be quickly applied to surfaces in situ. Alternatively, it can be mechanically fixed or secured using additional fastening methods depending on the application.

The flexibility of the mat ensures it can conform to irregular surfaces, curved geometries and complex equipment layouts, making it highly suitable for use in both standard and custom insulation systems.

Why Choose Silica Needlemat?

Silica needle mat combines high temperature resistance, excellent thermal insulation, and strong mechanical strength, making it one of the most effective insulation products available for demanding environments.

Its ability to perform in applications involving turbines, exhaust systems and industrial heat processes makes it a reliable solution across multiple sectors. Whether used in heavy industry or high-performance automotive systems, the material delivers consistent and long-lasting performance.

With its lightweight weight, flexibility and adaptability, silica needle mat is an ideal choice for engineers and buyers looking to improve insulation performance while maintaining ease of installation and durability across their project requirements.
